If you hold the training budget or the B-BBEE scorecard, this one is for you. The same AARTO training that protects your Proxy may also count towards your company’s B-BBEE Skills Development score. One spend, two benefits, as long as you keep the right records.
How Skills Development is measured
Skills Development is one of the elements on the B-BBEE scorecard. It measures how much a company spends on learning programmes for black people, as a percentage of its payroll (the “leviable amount”). For full points the target is about 6% of payroll on the generic scorecard, and 3% for Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSEs).
Exempted Micro Enterprises (EMEs) are not measured on the scorecard in the same way, so this matters most to QSEs and larger companies.
Where AARTO and labour law training fits
The Codes recognise several categories of learning programme, from bursaries and learnerships to informal training. Categories F and G cover occupationally directed informal instruction and work-based informal programmes: the kind of practical, job-related training our AARTO webinars provide.
- Spend in the informal categories (F and G) can count for up to 25% of your Skills Development spend.
- Course fees, training facilities and catering are recognised training costs. Travel and accommodation are capped at 15%.
- The training must be for black employees (including black employees with disabilities) to count on this element.
Because our webinars run live on Zoom, there is no travel or venue cost: the spend is the course fee itself.
Keep the evidence
Your B-BBEE verification agency decides what counts, so keep a clean file for every training spend:
- The invoice and proof of payment
- An attendance register with each delegate’s details
- The certificate of attendance. Every SASMiNT delegate receives one per person, per day.
Ask your verification agency early how they want informal training recorded. It is much easier than finding the paperwork at year end.
Procurement recognition too
SASMiNT is a Level 4 B-BBEE contributor, which gives you 100% procurement recognition on what you spend with us.
