Every South African employer must display the compulsory labour law charts. But a chart only protects your business if your people can actually read it. That’s why SASMiNT has launched bilingual compulsory chart packs: the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act summaries, printed side by side in English and Afrikaans, isiXhosa or isiZulu, at the same price as English only.
Why the language on your wall matters
Section 30 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act requires every employer to display a statement of employees’ rights where it can be read by employees, in the official languages which are spoken in the workplace. In a country with a multilingual workforce, an English-only chart may tick the box on paper while leaving many employees unable to understand their own rights.
The same applies to the Employment Equity Act notice and your health and safety information. If a worker can’t read a safety summary, it can’t protect them, and it won’t help you if an incident is investigated. A chart employees can read supports a fairer, safer workplace and stronger compliance.
Inspections are also on the rise: the Department of Employment and Labour has been running high-impact blitz inspections across all nine provinces. A missing, outdated or unreadable chart is one of the first things an inspector notices.
What’s in each pack
Every pack contains the three compulsory workplace charts:
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA): the prescribed legal summary
- Employment Equity Act (EEA): the mandatory legal summary
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA): SASMiNT’s clear, readable Executive Summary chart
In the bilingual packs each chart uses a 50/50 split layout, with English on one side and the second language on the other, so managers and employees read exactly the same information.
Four packs to match your workforce
- English / Afrikaans: ideal for the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State and anywhere with Afrikaans-speaking teams.
- English / isiXhosa: ideal for the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and anywhere with isiXhosa-speaking teams.
- English / isiZulu: ideal for KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and anywhere with isiZulu-speaking teams.
- Standard English: for workplaces where English is understood by everyone.
